Jaiku has free SMS notifications!
though jaiku has some amount of automatically recognizing replies which identi.ca doesn't :)

because you need to pay for it or why?
if for anything, I am really fond of Jaiku's way of handling replies
and MSN has awesome file transfer and custom emoticons!!!

Does openness require the implementation to be open too, of is an open interface, like this one, ok too? I really don't see the point in Affero-style licensing.

I like open and decentralized / federated -- you can run your own laconica instance (sounds like Jabber, eh?)
you CAN. And it's CRAP :) ... I am running one, and it's completely pointless. I miss the SMS!
